Explanations of Ratings

Keep in mind that the primary factor in rating decks is their spiritual and value and their originality in these regards. Although artistic merit and historical significance do factor into the ratings, they are not major factors in determining a rating and many well drawn and historically significant decks are rated poorly because of this. However the in depth reviews in the guide do fairly acknowledge both the artistic merit and the historical significance of poorly rated decks.

Highly Recommended – This is the equivalent of a four star rating. These are, spiritually, the very best decks on the market and are as close to flawless as a tarot deck ever gets. The designers of these decks obviously had a very deep and intimate understanding of tarot which they’ve perfectly expressed in the cards. Most of these decks are also very original in their design, the symbolism they use, and the ideas they express. If you love tarot, these are the tarot decks you have to get.

Recommended – These are tarot decks that I recommend buying, and the rating is equivalent to a three star rating. Although these decks are not perfect, none of these decks are flawed, and all of these decks are really good. Most of these decks just fall short in one or two areas, but are still solid decks for spiritual and magical use. Maybe there were a few cards where I felt the design or symbolism could have been better, or maybe I just didn’t feel as if the deck was original enough. Obviously, considering the name of this rating, these are decks I think you should buy, and at the very least you should look at these decks and see if you connect with them.

Low Recommendation – This is the equivalent of a two and a half star rating. Initially I wasn’t going to have a low recommendation rating, but as I was compiling the guide I started finding decks that I didn’t feel were good enough for me to recommend, yet I didn’t feel as if they were bad enough to place on the fence. Most of these decks are simply average decks. They’re solid decks, and maybe they even have a few original ideas incorporated into them, but there’s nothing very exciting about them. A few of these decks may have serious issues that prevent me from fully recommending them, but they make up for it by excelling in other areas. In any case, spiritually all of these decks work and none of them are so flawed in any regard that they are broken. You may want to look into these decks, but from my perspective there are much better decks that you can spend your money on.

On the Fence – These are decks I’m on the fence about recommending. These are decks that I feel have some redeeming spiritual value despite serious flaws. This can mean that they can be used spiritually, but only in a limited fashion, or that they express some interesting ideas or have some interesting cards, but the deck itself is fundamentally broken. It can also mean that the deck is solid but very derivative of other, better decks, or that although the deck is technically correct, its symbolism and spiritual insight is shallow. These are decks you may want to look into for spiritual use, but at the same time these decks are not going to work as well as the recommended tarots.

Not Recommended – These are decks that I do not recommend getting, at least for spiritual or magical use. Some of these decks are just poorly designed or very broken. Some of these decks though were designed as art decks and not meant for spiritual or magical use, or are historical reproductions that are of very limited spiritual value. If you’re only interested in tarot decks for their value as magical tools, you’ll no doubt want to avoid these decks. However if you also collect tarot decks for their artistic or historical value, many of these tarots may be decks that you’ll want to add to your collection.

Highly Not Recommended – These are the very worst tarots ever made. Tarots don’t get rated this low for being bad. They have to be horrifically bad, and I have to feel as if the people who made them did not invest the minimum amount of time and talent necessary to produce a tarot. These are decks that I feel were thrown together with out much thought and are now sold in an effort to cheat me out of money by selling me what the designer must know is worthless crap they spent no time making. The people who designed these decks and the people who publish them should be ashamed of themselves.

???? – These are decks that, for one reason or another, I didn’t feel qualified to review. As of this writing one of the decks in the list received this rating because it is still incomplete. A few of the decks received this rating because I have not found a copy of that particular edition and I’m unsure of what it really is or if it even exists. The majority of the decks that receive this rating though are due to the fact that they are themed around a religious system I am not very familiar with and knowledge of the system seems to be essential to understanding the tarot’s design.

    You forgot one Tarot deck that I use all of the time, and I consider it to be a pretty good deck. It’s called the Voyager Tarot – produced through a collage process using real photos. The reason I like it is that it has images of real people in it. It follows the pattern of the basic Crowley/Golden Dawn deck, but has a few different variations that I actually like.

    1. That deck does seem to have flown under my radar. Oddly enough I was just looking at some of the new Spring tarot releases this morning and making a list of decks to keep a look out for so I can add them to the next update of the guide. I’m going to add the Voyager Tarot on their too. Thanks.
